Cathedral of St. George the Victorious

During the reconstruction of the central railway station and the creation of a new station square in front of the South Terminal, the dean of the Kiev-Svyatoshinsky district, Archpriest Vasily Rusinka, turned to the Minister of Transport and Communications, General Director of Ukrzaliznytsia Georgy Kirpa with a request to build a cathedral – he supported the idea. On April 17, 2001, Tuesday of Bright Week, His Beatitude Metropolitan Vladimir, Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, performed a prayer service and laid the first stone in the foundation of the temple. The temple was built in a record time – 72 days, for which it was included in the Guinness Book of Records. It took another 40 days to complete the interior finishing. On August 22, 2001, the temple was consecrated and opened along with the entire railway station complex.

On March 2, 2003, the St. George Church was given the status of the Cathedral of Railway Workers of Ukraine and a particle of the relics of the Holy Great Martyr George the Victorious was donated. The Cathedral of St. George the Victorious was built in the Byzantine style and has a height of 42 meters. During construction, new modern technologies were used (monolithic frame structure), which made it possible to build the temple in the shortest possible time. An addition to the temple was a bell tower in the Art Nouveau style, in the form of two intersecting arches. The interior decoration of the temple amazes with its beauty and grandeur. Wall paintings made by masters of the Ukrainian Art Academy successfully combine picturesque biblical scenes and colorful patterned ornaments. The interior of the temple is decorated with a wooden iconostasis with a carved dome above the altar and gilded figures of angels.

Divine services and sacraments are performed daily in the temple. There is a Sunday school for adults. The priests and parishioners of the temple actively participate in the life and development of both the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the state as a whole. The clergy of the temple constantly take care of the spiritual education of young people and participate in the religious life of their parishioners. At the temple there is a pilgrimage service “Istoki Pilgrimage Center”, which is engaged in spiritual and educational activities.
