Academic Theater of Ukrainian Folklore “Bereginya”

The theater was founded in 1988 on the initiative of the Ukrainian folklorist Nikolai Buravsky and with the support of the National Union of Writers of Ukraine, the Rylsky University of Folklore and Ethnography. The Bereginya Theater is called upon to stage complex examples of folklore heritage at a highly professional artistic level and reveal the peculiarities of the cultural and historical traditions of the Ukrainian people. The theater’s repertoire includes about two dozen programs: ceremonies, customs, rituals, songs, music, dances, witty humor. The creative composition of the theater ensemble is professional singers, musicians and dancers. Musical accompaniment is performed by professional musicians who play the violin, cymbals, tambourine, lyre, violin, flute and other instruments. The stage outfit of the artists is made according to samples of real ethnographic costumes, on which the best artists of Ukraine worked.

The Bereginya Theater has almost fifty performers, but the composition of the creative group can be freely transformed to suit the needs of any performance venue. At various times, Honored Artists of Ukraine Nadezhda Buravskaya, Anatoly Pakhomov, Stepan Shkolny, Yaroslav Tsebrinsky, Tatyana Halash, and 18 laureates of international competitions worked here. The founder of the theater and chief director is People’s Artist of Ukraine, laureate of the International Prize Nikolai Buravsky. The theatrical ensemble “Bereginya” worthily represents Ukrainian folklore abroad. His tours took place in Germany, Poland, Yugoslavia, Holland, Bulgaria, Spain, Monaco, Austria, France, Italy, Egypt, Turkey, Greece, Switzerland, Romania, South Africa, Korea, and Japan. At the large International competition in Johannesburg (South Africa), the Bereginya theater won 5 gold and 1 silver certificate, overall receiving first place. At the International Competition in Pyongyang (DPRK), the ensemble won 2 gold, 2 silver prizes, 2 international prizes and the Main Cup. In 2011 and 2012, as part of the days of Ukrainian culture in the states of Turkmenistan and Israel, the team adequately represented Ukraine.

The theater has a rich repertoire: “Glorious Cossacks Cossacks”, “Love My Brothers”, “Partisan Glory”, “Women”, “Ukrainian Den”, “Naddniepryansk Wedding”, “Kupala Lights”, “Vesnyanka”, “Ukrainian Folk Polyphony” ”, “Milky Way”, “Learn from others, and do not shy away from your own”, “Rusalia”, “I am your destiny”.
