Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ

The Kiev Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ is the main cathedral of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. On October 27, 2002, the cornerstone of the future cathedral was consecrated with the participation of Lyubomir Huzar (Primate of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church). Construction of the complex began on September 9, 2002. Until June 2003, the ground floor of the Patriarchal Cathedral was built and construction of the administrative building began. Until the end of 2004, the walls were erected, first to the level of 13 meters, and later to the pylon (level of the central vault of the temple) part of the cathedral.

On October 10, 2004, the cathedral was consecrated and 5 crosses were installed. All bishops of the UGCC from four continents of the world took part in the consecration. On that day, the main cross on the central dome was raised and installed. At the end of 2005, the installation of the metal frame of the central vault of the temple began. It was raised in segments (four in total) and, only then, connected. This work was completed only in the early summer of 2006. The first service in the temple was held on January 19, 2006, on the feast of the Epiphany. It was held in the basement of the cathedral. The decoration of the interior space of the temple is bright white, the color of the walls, floor, altar structures (throne, altar, bishop’s throne), symbolically reproduces the light of the most important gospel event, to which the temple is dedicated – the Resurrection of Christ. The dome of the cathedral was built without supporting structures.

The temple was opened on March 27, 2011 with the enthronement of Svyatoslav Shevchuk, who was elected supreme archbishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. It could have been built much faster, but the church leadership categorically refused to support big business and officials. The cathedral has an area of 3000 square meters, a height of 50 meters and can accommodate about 1500 people. On August 18, 2013, the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church was solemnly consecrated by Supreme Archbishop Svyatoslav. And on June 5, 2017, on the Day of the Holy Spirit, Lyubomir Huzar, the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in 2001-2011, was buried in the crypt of the cathedral. The funeral took place with a large crowd of people, with the participation of bishops of the UGCC, representatives of other confessions and religions, and the diplomatic corps.
