Building of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine

In the 70s of the 19th century, according to the design of the architect Alexander Shile, 2 buildings were erected on Bankovaya 11 for the Kyiv military district. Famous military leaders worked here over the years. Before the revolution of 1917 – generals of the Russian Empire Nikita Alekseev, Mikhail Dragomirov, Vladimir Sukhomlinov. In 1918, the general headquarters of the army of the Ukrainian People’s Republic was located here, during the statehood of Hetman P. Skoropadsky – the general headquarters of the army of the Ukrainian state. Among the staff members were outstanding Ukrainian military leaders – the commander of the UPR army, General-Corruption Vasily Tyutyunnik, General-Coronet Marko Bezruchko, Colonel Yevgeny Meshkivsky.

The modern building was erected on the foundation of old buildings of the Kyiv military district. The author of the project was the architect Sergei Grigoriev. His assistant was the academician architect Boris Zhezherin. The new house received elongated wings, and in the center of the composition there was a massive risalit with an inset colonnade of the large Corinthian order. The imperious monumentality of the house is emphasized by the heavy entablature, the facing of the base with polished labradorite, and gray “fur coat” plaster. The grandeur was also added by 4 polished stone balls flanking the portal of the main entrance. The architect calculated all the details so accurately that the huge house, despite its location on a narrow street, not only did not “crush” the environment, but is also clearly visible from all points: from Institutskaya and Lutheranskaya, from the neighboring Franko Estate Square and from the distant Mikhailovskaya Square .

The room was built in the style of “solemn Stalinist communist-Soviet monumental Empire style with ancient Roman stylization,” which was intended to symbolize the greatness, power and eternity of the communist regime. According to other sources, the style of the house combines elements of classical style and Ukrainian baroque. In the courtyard there is a dining room, laundry, dry cleaning, printing house, government administration premises and others. In Soviet times, Alexander Egorov, Jonah Yakir, Vasily Blyukher, Georgy Zhukov, Nikolai Vatutin worked here. During the fascist occupation of Kyiv, the Kiev General Commissariat was located in this building. After the Great Patriotic War, the central committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine was located here. It was here that the offices of the first secretaries of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine Nikita Khrushchev, Leonid Melnikov, Alexei Kirichenko, Nikolai Podgorny, Pyotr Shelest, Vladimir Shcherbitsky were located.
