Kiev Opera and Ballet Theater for children and youth

The theater was created in 1982 under the name of the State Children’s Musical Theatre. The theater became the first (and so far the only) in Ukraine and the second in the world of this type. On February 1, 1985, the theater opened with the opera “Winter and Spring” by the outstanding Ukrainian composer Nikolai Lysenko. In 1998, the theater received its own premises in Podol and the name Kiev State Musical Theater for Children and Youth. In 2002, for outstanding services in the development of art and on the occasion of the theater’s 20th anniversary, it was granted academic status. Since 2005, the name of the theater has become the Kiev Municipal Academic Opera and Ballet Theater for Children and Youth. The theater shows 20 to 25 performances every month. Today the theater’s repertoire includes about 60 performances. In total, over the years of its existence, the team has staged 138 productions (these are works by more than 70 composers) and more than 40 theater performances were staged for the first time. These are operas, ballets, musicals, musical fairy tales, symphonic and vocal-symphonic works for audiences of different ages, which have become a significant contribution to the treasury of national musical and theatrical art. The ensemble includes opera and ballet troupes, a symphony orchestra, and a choir. Since 2009, the theater has included the company “Kyiv Modern Ballet“.
