Church of St. Nicholas on the Waters

St. Nicholas Church on the Water (other names: Church of St. Nicholas on the Water, St. Nicholas Church on the Waters, Kiev Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, Temple of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker) is the first and only temple in Ukraine located in the water area. The height of the temple is 23 meters. A 15-meter bridge leads from the shore to the church. The temple accommodates about 50 people, and the platform in front of it accommodates the same number.

The Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, better known as the Church of St. Nicholas on the Waters, has recently adorned the Dnieper embankment, but it seems as if it has been standing here for a long time – its graceful forms fit so harmoniously into the architectural ensemble of Podol. Unusual in its location and beauty, the church building, made in the Ukrainian neo-baroque style, is a place not only for church services, but also a monument to the fallen rivermen and sailors who served their Fatherland with faith and truth.

In 2003, at a depth of 10 meters, the bottom was cleared and strengthened, after which the first pile of the future temple was driven in. In total, its foundation included 12 reinforced concrete piles 14 meters long. They were surrounded by 75 12-meter long cords, which were installed in a ring with a diameter of 12.5 meters. According to the projects of the design and technological institute of river transport “Rechtransproekt”, a reinforced concrete structure was erected on piles, reminiscent of a “wine glass leg”, but very strong, according to design calculations, withstanding enormous loads and seismic shocks over 7 points.

On July 7, 2004, on the day of the celebration of the birth of the prophet and forerunner John the Baptist, His Beatitude Vladimir, Metropolitan of Kiev and All Ukraine, consecrated the temple in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and the first Divine Liturgy, at which numerous clergy and people prayed, who came to rejoice at the long-awaited event. At the end of the Liturgy, His Beatitude Bishop Vladimir presented the new church with an ancient icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker with a piece of the holy relics of this great saint.
