North bridge

Before the creation of the Vigurovshchina-Troyeshchyna residential area on the left bank of Kyiv, it was decided to connect it with the right bank by a separate bridge. In 1968 Georgy Fuchs (also designed metro bridge, South Bridge, Podolsky Bridge ) began work on the creation of the North Bridge project. In less than 3 years, a bridge project was developed in which there was the longest span at that time, 300 meters long. Such a long span was due to the proximity of the Petrovsky railway bridge and, as a result, the need to create the necessary angle of approach of the fairway to it in order to avoid bulk and collision of swimming facilities on the supports of the future bridge.

During the construction process, various problems arose, and one of them was that domestic ropes were not suitable for the formation of guys due to low elasticity. In the end, a solution was found – the rope was formed from parallel high-strength wires with a diameter of 5 millimeters – 91 wires per rope. They were made in Kiev, but quite far from the construction site and the delivery of the ropes caused many problems: the ropes, more than 200 meters long, were wound on a huge drum, loaded onto a tractor and, accompanied by several traffic police cars, were transported around the city for 15 kilometers. In order to understand the essence of the problem, it is enough to say that the drum with the rope occupied almost 3 lanes of the highway with its width. After several such deliveries, they were abandoned and the production of ropes was organized near the bridge, from where they were brought to the installation site on special carts.

There was a year left before the bridge was put into operation, when the leadership of Kyiv had an idea to decorate the top of the pylon with boat with the founders of Kyiv. Of course, all the people of Kiev, and not only them, know this sculpture – it was eventually installed on the Dnieper embankment in Navodnitsky Park. And all because the pylon was already 100% ready by that time and no one expected such an impressive additional load. At the same time, the coat of arms of Kyiv was approved: a silver bow symbolizing Kievan Rus was depicted on the heraldic shield, a branch of a flowering chestnut tree, as the emblem of the current Kiev, and the golden star of the hero city. There was a month left before the opening of the North Bridge, when the emblem was ordered from forged red copper to be installed on a pylon. The height of the coat of arms is about 6 meters and it is clearly visible from below. Oddly enough, the copper was specially oxidized so that it would not shine, and over time it darkened even more and almost visually merged with the concrete of the pylon.
